Dammed River

The photo fades
As we have changed
Years making us other
Or maybe just more
Of the same yet
Veils and masks change
The photo still fades
Make it an oil painting
Better yet
Marble or glass sculpt
The time to be

Do those
Who posed
For Michelangelo
Still walk the earth
Filled with memories

Those who went before

Who can tell anyone
What great great great great
GREAT grandmother said
When she was sixteen
Near her husband-to-be
On the bank of a river
Now dammed
Once apples dropped
Into open hands

Her memories
Of his eyes
Her whispered words

“I love you”

Throwing him the apple
Bite it today
Bite yesterday
Taste it on your tongue
You are the only one
Who ever will
